Dr. Heidi Nahum's Clinical Practice
Heidi's Forms and Documents
I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with over 18 years of experience in psychologcial assessment and treatment. My area of expertise is with young adults through older adults and I generally do not see individual's under 18 years of age. I am invested in partnering with individuals and couples to foster optimal wellness in physical, emotional, interpersonal and spiritual areas of living. My treatment approach is efficient and solution-focused and I am committed to empowering people to acquire the necessary motivation, insights, knowledge and tools to promote permanent changes in their lives. While I draw from a variety of theories and techniques in promoting personal change, the therapeutic approach which is most prevailing in my work is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. This has been repeatedly proven in scientific study to be an effective method of promoting improvement in psychological functioning across a broad range of presenting complaints. To learn more about how Cognitive Behavioral Therapy works please see the document in the right hand margin. My couples therapy work is grounded in behavioral therapy principles and focuses on assisting couples with identifying and arresting destructive relationship patterns or habitual ways of behaving which undermine a sense of security in the future of the relationship, fulfillment of needs, and emotional and physical intimacy. I assist couples with understanding the unique needs they bring to their relationship and build concrete skills for effectively communicating feelings, needs and concerns to maximize fulfillment of needs. I specialize in treating mood and anxiety disorders, interpersonal relationship problems, substance abuse, adjustment to major life transitions and reproductive hormone related mood changes. Behavioral medicine and health psychology have long been a focus of my clinical practice and professional interests and I bring a strong knowledge of the relationship between psychological functioning and physical wellness to my work. I believe that the maximum benefit of therapy is achieved when insights, knowledge, tools, and skills acquired in therapy are practiced on a routine basis outside of therapy and therefore I regularly assign homework between sessions. I consider the therapeutic relationship to be a partnership and rely on your active involvement and honesty in therapy to facilitate the change that you desire for yourself. Please feel free to talk to me further about what I see as my role and what I see as your role in working together to achieve your desired goals.
